This is one of the three visitor centers for Isle Royale and the only one not on the island. If you find yourself waiting for a boat or plane, this is a great place to burn some time and plan your trip so that you don't need to spend much time island-side at the visitor center there.
They have the basic stuff here. Shirts, magnets, trinkets, books, and maps. The ranger staffing the place was friendly and chill.
We came to learn more about Isle Royals because we hope to visit in the future but the ranger was rude and unfriendly. We watched the 25 minute film- it was good :)
This was the starting point for an epic 9 day backpacking trek across Isle Royale. The visitor center is not much, but it is the location of the Ranger III, the vessel that crosses Lake Superior to Isle Royale. The park rangers on the Ranger III were outstanding. During the six hour ride to the island, the rangers provide an overview of the rules and issue permits. They will answer any questions you have.
My guess is that the visitor center does not see many visitors, except for days that the Ranger departs or arrives. The VC stocks the standard shirts, maps, books, and other souvenirs.
Great place to get information regarding a journey to Isle Royale National Park. The staff was friendly and informative, and there were plenty of wares to commemorate your adventures, be it a trip to the island or a drive to Houghton. This is a must-stop.
Houghton is a cute town in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Cute restaurants and a few breweries. Nice picnic area with tables and umbrellas on the river front walkway. Nice place to eat and look at the bridge and old mine. We took out food, ate here, and enjoyed the afternoon with our dog.
Descent store, not a lot else. Mostly a functional parks depot, park management and transportation to Isle Royale itself.
Well thought out Visitor Center with plenty of parking for us since the Ranger III was not yet running. Not sure how it would be when it is. Interesting video and some nice information. Rangers on duty were informative and well versed in the Park and talked about the area and the park. We did not go to the actual park since it was early in the season and snowing. But they gave us options if we did want to head out there.
I've been going on the ranger for years, every time it was amazing and I had lots of fun on isle royale. It's a great place to fish and hike, so I'd definitely want to take my kids when I get older.
